2/26/16 – Friday – Laptops

Team 696 had a couple of visitors today. One was from the Gene Haas Foundation while the other was from Edge Factor. They were given a tour of the lab and met some members along the way.

After the guests left, Team 696 started their day off with a meeting. Members were told the schedule and what should be done. Teams set off to accomplish their tasks shortly thereafter.

Business member Andrea worked on the Alumni Book. She also began working on the CNC Router.

Programming member Daniel worked on the Shooter on the Practice Robot. Other member Bhavin worked on vision processing whilst John and Jake helped set up the field.

2/23/16 – Tuesday – Bag Day

It was the big day! The moment everyone was waiting for. Bag Day had finally arrived, the day where – at midnight – the team would have to put their Robot into a bag until Competition.

Needless to say, everyone was pretty excited. After the briefing meeting, members split off to finish their assigned tasks.

Lousaper made some spacers for the Winch and Telescoping Arms on the CNC Lathe. She then helped clean the drive field in the cafetorium.

Programming members Bhavin and Daniel worked on getting the code ready to test on the Competition Robot. Other members Jake and John helped set up the drive field. Jake also ran some battery tests.

James of CAM finished the Operator Control Panel. The entire creation of it, from CAD to the countersinks were all him.

For dinner the team got chili. It was quite good.

Mr. Black spent some time to review the t-shirt design then order quantities. He then polished the driver’s side of the Suburban to help the Business team apply the vinyl logos. After this, Mr. Black helped get the Competition as ready as the team could before bagging it.

2/20/16 – Saturday – Field Duty

Programming team members were busy doing separate tasks. Jake worked on the Team’s batteries – testing them and making certain they were in peak condition. Bhavin and Daniel continued to program different parts of the Robot. They also worked on tuning a control for turning on the Practice Robot and tuning the controls for the Pivoting Arm that will be on the Robot. After this, Daniel tried something new and worked on soldering some motors for the Competition Robot.

Jacob of Simulation team worked with Dr. Stone in the Cinema room as usual. With some assistance, Jacob was able to recreate some data for the documentation. He also fixed some formatting before departing for the day.

CNC Mill team member Dustin finished three parts with help from CAM member Jonna. Dustin first manufactured out shoulder joints or “socks” from three pieces of stock using tabs. He then created the omni-wheel hub, which went very quickly as it was a small part. Lathe member Lousaper had already cut the stock out on the Lathe, so the going was fairly easy for Dustin.

The final operations of the day were making the Shooter Plate that will push the ball into the flywheels. The whole part took three hours, and Dustin was able to make three parts.

Andrea of Business team finished the Alumni Cover and worked on the Suburban. She also began looking into the parts-list that will be needed. Other members Arvin and Anna used the Vinyl machine to create sponsorship logos that they’ll later place on the Suburban.

As the day ran from around 9:00 AM and would continue past 6:00, lunch was brought for the members. The food was from El Pollo Loco, with chicken, mac-n-cheese, and rice.

Mr. Black continued work on the supplies-purchasing list for the Lab. He also polished out the passenger side of the Suburban with a dual-action buffer to prepare the vinyl placements. Mr. Black went on to assemble the Competition Robot’s Shooter as well.

The lab closed at 2:00 AM, one of the latest times thus far.

2/19/16 – Friday – The Flat Earth

With only a few days left until Build End, every second wasted was a failure. But Team 696 still held a meeting before getting to work. It was a Friday, but school ended around 1:00 as it was a minimum day for the students. This meant Team 696 could meet for longer.

Jacob of Simulation team worked on the documentation. This covered static friction, shooter geometry, ball trajectory, drag, video verification of ball trajectory, calculating trajectory, and cleanup on the formatting. Team 696 is certainly glad we have Jacob as a member.

The wonderful Lathe team, consisting of member Lousaper, kept working on Delrin spacers. These would be formatted to the Telescoping Arm. Lousaper also worked on the spoil syncro bar and omni-wheel shaft.

Dustin, a member of CNC Mill team, remade two of the Spring Plates for the Telescoping Arm because two had snapped. The process took about 5 hours, he used the Super Mini Mill 2.

For dinner, as the meeting ran over 6:00 PM, was brought in. It consisted of fantastic chicken, pita bread and hummus, green beans, and a home-made potato dish.

Business team member Arvin finalized the textual components of the formal Business Plan. He was assisted in doing so by Anna. Andrea helped set up the gym for practice drive runs with the robot. She also finished the button designs on Adobe Illustrator and continued the Alumni book cover.

Mr. Hoard, the Business team’s mentor and local “Super Genius” as he’s called, saved the day once again. The Telescoping Arms were sticking together, so the Extravagant Mr. Hoard designed and manufactured a prototype of the “hats.”

Mr. Black sent  in the request for buses for our regional competition trips, made a lunch reservation for the Ventura trip, worked on building an ordering list for equipment and supplies for the lab, and machined snap ring grooves in the omni-wheel axles for the robot’s claw.

The lab closed at 12:00 AM.

2/15/16 – Monday – Burning Rubber

As usual, the day began with a meeting. But this one was at 10:00 AM as there was no school. After this brief meeting, the members broke off to accomplish their daily tasks.

Lousaper, our wonderful lady of the Lathe, has been on a streak of making parts on the Lathe. This day was no exception, and she finished the Shooter-Gearbox Spacers and Tension Rods.

Business team member Nicole worked on the Alumni Book and began adding sponsor vinyl to Team 696’s trailer. Anna finished 7 sections of the Business Plan and helped Arvin with some dog tags after working on the vinyl machine.

For lunch Team 696 were given delicious tostadas. They were also given cake as it was Daniel of Programming’s birthday! Happy Birthday Daniel!!!!!! We thank you for the cake.

Jacob of Simulation worked on documenting what he and Dr. Stone have been doing for the entire Build Season thus far. With about a page done, there’s still much to write about and even more to do still.

Luke of Web spent the day polishing the Scouting System that we’ll use during competition. During this, fellow Clark student Maggy worked on scripting and story-boarding the Chairman’s Award Video.

CNC Mill member Dustin faced off the remaining stock after doing the first operation on the Arm Plate Supports. To do the operations Dustin and Nanor had to Mill special steps into soft jaws on the Super Mini Mill 2 with CAM program provided by Jonna of CAM. They were able to finish 16 supports, all still needing to be drilled.

Programming member Daniel worked on programming the Robot so it could drive straight if needed. Alexander halted his work to put on the Pivot Arm.

Karin of Prototype team helped Vice-President Alexander attach small BaneBot wheels onto the Shooter. She and CAD member Mikia then joined Alexander, President Mika, Programmer Daniel, and Photographer/Blogger and Ruggedly Handsome member Samuel in the gym. While there members helped try and attach the Pivot Arm to the Robot and make the Obstacles more secure.

Before long it was time to clean up the area, so around 5:30 CAD members Anthony and Claire as well as CAM member Jonna, CNC Mill member Nanor, and Prototype member Lauren were called down to assist. Together they were able to clean up the area and return to the lab in no time.

Alexander continued to work on the Robot after bringing it back up into the lab. Still attempting to attach the Pivot Arm, he first had to attach additional parts.

Mr. Black finished machining the Lathe Operations to create the Winch Spools, but they still need work before becoming completely finished.

The lab closed fairly early at about 7:45 PM to allow the members to head home and finish their homework before school the next day.

2/13/16 – Saturday – Apples and Oranges

Team 696 started their day off at 10:00 AM, an hour later than usual. Before starting any actual work, the members gathered on the Lab Floor to take part in an information-based meeting where updates were given and tasks assigned.

CNC Mill team member Dustin finished Milling the 0.75″ boxtubes on the Mill, mostly consisting of drilling and tapping holes. Then he took Jonna’s CAM program to make holes on the 1″ boxtube for the extending arm, all six taking an hour in total. After this, Dustin was helped by CAD member Claire with Milling six elbow connectors that will be attached to the Telescoping Arm, with Claire setting up and offsetting the stock. She also cut pieces with the band-saw.

Animation team member Anthony C. finalized his explosion animation while Christopher deconstructed and grouped the Robot for the driving animation.

Jacob and mentor Dr. Stone of Simulation team spent the day refining their model of the shooter. After adding the piston’s force, the two were able to account for the ball being shot by the piston into the shooter wheels, then being pushed through those wheels, being propelled then by the wheels only, and finally the ball exiting the system.

Lousaper of Lathe team finished the Pivot and Winch Gearbox Shafts as well as the ThunderHex Shafts for the Claw.

Business member Anna was able to finally finish the Business Plan Layout. She had been working at this for the past few meetings, so the completion of said Layout is a huge accomplishment on her part. Working in the same room was Samuel, the team’s handsome and single Photographer and Blogger. He was writing up the prior day’s blog before heading off to take beautiful pictures.

Luke of Web continued working on the Chairman’s Video Script. He also sorted through some b-roll footage to try and source the best ones to use.

Mika, our Decadent President, worked alongside many different sub-groups. She helped Programming team get the Robot to drive, then she assisted Photography mentor Mariam in taking pictures of parts. Mika also continued wiring the Robot with help from Vice-President Alexander, then creating her own blueprint using Vault for the first time ever. Besides all this, Mika also took newly machined parts and sanded and buffed them. We thank you for your ever-hardworking ethics Mika.

Mr. Black submitted two DonorsChoose projects. One was for PLA filament and the other was for SSDs for new programming laptops. He also machined an additional arm pivot, 6 arm pivot-tube spacers, and compacted aluminum chips for recycling. Mr. Black then ajusted the belt tension on the Tormach SlantPro Lathe, used Inventor HSM to program a winch spool Lathe operation, and configured the Haas Lathe post processor. He also ran the first automated part cycle operation on the Haas ST-10 Lathe, a big accomplishment.

The lab finally closed at 2:05 in the morning.

2/12/16 – Friday – First Steps

As usual, the team held a meeting before going to their tasks. At this meeting, they were told what to do for the day, and congratulated on their hard-working efforts for the past few weeks.

CNC Mill member Dustin began Milling the bar-stock for the three sizes of Arm Extension mechanisms. All six completed, two being 0.75″ and some 1.5″, during this Nanor and CAM member Jonna modified the black sprockets as some new holes needed to be drilled.

Lousaper, the team’s CNC Lathe team member, started making the pivot and winch gearbox shafts. Lots of progress was made this day.

James of CAM designed a Lathe operation for the very first time. Even he, an aged member of Team 696 still learns new things on a daily basis on the operations of the lab. The part James was designing will be a spool to be cut out on the Haas CNC Lathe.

Andrea of Business team finished vectoring dog tags for mentors. She had been using Adobe Illustrator, and now she continued to design the Alumni Book.

Programming team member Daniel was able to get the 2016 Robot to drive after much work. John watched Daniel throughout this process to fully understand how to program the Robot. Jake continued working with the team’s batteries.

Web member Luke continued writing up the Chairman’s Video script. He was helped by the beautiful and amazing Blogger and Photographer Samuel. They were also assisted by Clark student Maggy.

Mr. Black and Mr. Widholm continued their learning of the Haas ST-10 CNC Lathe. Today they attempted making the Arm Pivot Tube with very nice results. While they’re still running the machine manually, they hope to have it run an automatic program tomorrow. Mr. Black also took some parts to the Team’s anodizing sponsor and picked up rivets for the Frame Skidplates.

As the team would be staying late, pizza was brought and fed to the members. We were very happy and joyous for this event.

Also, the 2016 Robot has made its first steps! That’s right, the practice bot is now able to drive wired – a very big achievement and notable milestone in this Build Season.

The lab closed around 1:30 AM.

2/8/16 – Monday – President Lincoln Day

There was no school this Monday as the GUSD was celebrating Lincoln’s birthday this day. But this just meant Team 696 could meet for longer.

Members filled the lab at 9:00 AM, ready to begin their work. Today was to be a long workday, and the faster they get started the more that can be accomplished.

Sipan of CAD finished the design for the control board module. He printed out the hole positions, getting Karin of Prototype to become accustomed to the button placements before finalizing the design. They then decided to drill and tap the holes to mount the Leonardo board in order to save some time. Cutting will begin once the 1/4″ polycarbonate arrives.

Welding team Eden and Roupen welded for the day. They were able to weld plates to the superstructure, then file down the superstructure arms so they can fit onto the frame.

For lunch, the members were awarded with amazing sandwiches. Condiments and other toppings were also present, as well was sodas for the very happy Team 696 member to grab for themselves. There was even chips present! It was fantastical.

Business room member Anna, newly returned, put the GEF logo on the wall. She then finished the last revision of the Business plan. Nicole, other Business member worked on the Alumni Book.

CNC Mill member Nanor was helped by CAM member Jonna to begin manufacturing the sprocket plates from cylindrical stock that Dustin had previously cut out. The piece was not finished however, due to a tool breaking and some CAM difficulties. Dustin was manufacturing the first half of the Robot Arm during this time.

Lousaper, the sole member of CNC Lathe team, started making Gearbox Spacers. These will be used to add space to the gearboxes.

Programming team member Jake remade SnapDragon’s code from scratch during the meeting. Other member Daniel worked with Karin from Prototype team to find the types of buttons needed for the Control Board. Bhavin spent the day getting more commands set up into the code for the new Robot.

James of CAM worked on the Main Robot Arm on his computer. But while they were running the part, the spindle crashed down onto the part.

Other accomplishments of the day include the finalization of the Winch Gearbox, with machining to be started soon. It will use two 775pro motors close to 75:1, and will be used to retract the telescoping arms to lift up the Robot at the end of the match – designed to lift it in under 2 seconds.

The 3″ x 3″ box-tube of the Arm Structure has begun being machined. Special tires have been installed on the Practice Robot as well as full transmissions and a belt-drive system.

2/6/16 – Saturday – Late Start

The day started later than usual, beginning at 10:00 instead of 9:00, members assembled in the lab for their meeting.

Business member Andrea received the Platinum-Wrench Award. Still just a rookie member, Andrea had been given many jobs to finish in a short amount of time. Everyone was glad to have Andrea on their team.

After getting the award, Andrea went into the Business room to finish working on the dog tags using Adobe Illustrator. She also worked on the cover for the Alumni Book.  Other Business member Nicole made the team’s standard (flag). Nicole also contacted Team 696 alumni to update the Alumni Book.

CAM team member James had to leave early for he became sick. Before leaving he worked on creating a 9″ arm support box-tube and two of four pieces on CAM. Jonna, the other CAM member, worked on supports for the arm as well, and a spring holder for the hook pistons that will allow the robot to hold itself up from the Castle.

Programming team member John programmed Snapdragon to drive autonomously while Bhavin continued working on the camera. Bhavin finally found a way to have the camera work with Centurion. Daniel continued making code for Centurion so it could also drive autonomously as Snapdragon did.

Lunch for the day was more pizza, which was absolutely amazing. It is unknown how pizza can taste so delicious such as this one did.

CNC Mill member Dustin Milled out three Standoffs on the Super Mini Mill 2. He also used the Mini Mill to manufacture 9″ support plates. The Mini Mill 2 actually broke down for a while, before members found the program problem. Nanor cut stock for small pieces that will later be used in the arm-extension mechanism of the Robot.

Jacob of Simulation and Dr. Stone, his mentor, continued organizing parameters from the shooting problem which was how the RPM would decrease during shooting out he ball. The wanted RPM is 5,000 and the gearing was 12:45, but now they’ve tried 45:12 instead with a starting RPM of 18,700. Reason being is the motor’s capacity is already 18,700 and it will cause the final to be 1,300 RPM. This cleared up programming issues as well.

Mika, our Solid President worked with Karin with wiring the Power Distribution Panel, getting power to all electrical components, and routing the PWM wires to the roboRIO. She also did a lot of stock cutting and the usual task of watching over everybody.

Mr. Black was able to paint an old metal cart, hex broach and tumble the wheel hubs, flush tumbler with clean water, and organize endmills in the inventory room. He also installed a coolant circulating pump in the Haas Super Mini Mill 2 and cleaned the pump in Haas Mini Mill. Mr. Black even began wiring LED flood light that will be installed to Haas Mini Mill and then fabricated hold-down feet for the new arbor press stand.

Alexander, our Fatherly Vice-President, finalized the pivot structure for the Robot Arm. It was decided that the superstructure frame will have an aluminum tube as a sleeve welded to it, and then a 1.5″ OD tube will go inside of that and be used as the pivot joint.

And inside of this dead axle tube will be a live ThunderHex shaft that will power the winch spools on both sides of the robot.

Alexander also began working on the Winch Gearbox. This 9/16″ bore, 1/2″ stroke pneumatic cylinder will be used to actuate the pawl to allow for the telescoping arms to be quickly released. Parts used for climbing for the telescoping arms were being cut and machined as well.

The lab closed at around 12:50 AM, with the final member leaving at 1:30.

2/5/16 – Friday – Wired

School at Clark Magnet ends at 3:00, but by 3:10, those in Robotics meet in the lab to begin working. They all first attend a meeting that tells them what they should focus on for the day.

Member Luke of Web team worked alongside Clark student Maggy. Together, the pair worked on the script for the Chairman’s Video. Hopefully, this will be completed soon so the actual editing can begin.

Business team member Andrea worked on Excel, adding new sponsors to the sponsor list. She also worked on the dog tags with Adobe Illustrator, and is glad to report some of the dog tag designs are completed. Nicole remade the PDF of Behind the Design page featuring Team 696 for Mr. Black, then she continued working on the Team’s Brand Guide.

James of CAM finished the standoff program. At around 9:00 PM the standoff was beginning to be manufactured. James then began working on another standoff, but this one looks a little different.

Karin of Prototype worked with Mika for the whole day. Together they began wiring the Practice Robot. To do so, Karin had to learn all about the wiring process, then they had to actually physically wire it up.

Right before dinner, the Team had a Noodle War where they used Pool Noodles as their weapons. It was fierce and very fun.

Eden and Roupen of Welding finished the bumper brackets. They continued to weld the base plate onto the frame, finishing that as well. Good job Welding team.

Simulation member Jacob and Dr. Stone – his mentor – were concerned that the torque of the motors would end up stalling out, so they looked through their calculations. They found that when the ball is being shot out it doesn’t stall the motor at all. During the 1/240th of a second that the ball is in contact with the wheels, Jacob and Dr. Stone calculated it would reduce the RPM by about 200. After talking with Alexander, they now have to find calculations about a back axle in the shooter that would add some mass and act as a flywheel. A flywheel, not to be confused with a shooter wheel, is a wheel that’s specifically made to add inertia to a system. This would make the reduce in RPM less, increasing the torque of the shooter itself and decrease strain on the battery.

Mr. Black assembled the Kreg stand for Arbor press. He also fabricated a wooden top and organized the machinist toolbox.

Alexander, our Fantastical Vice-President, finalized the Pivot Gearbox. It will utilize two 775pro motors at almost 280:1 reduction to rotate the entire Robot Arm.

Continued wiring of the robot continued while Alexander finished the Competition Robot design. He also found a way to mount the sprocket for the arm joint to the box-tube and how to get the arm to pivot on a strong joint that won’t break.

The lab closed at 1:30 AM.
